Chat with Da Boss
Mar. 10th, 2007 03:50 pmWow. So I'm at quarters right now, using my partner's laptop to post this. I just got off the phone with my district manager about a little "siutation" that I seemed to have caused. Apparently, someone in one of the local fire departments stumbled upon this blog -- I forget how small the internet really is, I guess -- and a recent post of mine (that I neglected to secure) wound up in the hands of my DM. Most of you probably saw it, I was talking about how well my partner and I have been getting along with a ceratin fire crew. Additionally, I referred to another firefighter from another city whom we saw at the hospital. (I don't think I mentioned he was from another city, but he was.) I made references to him being attractive and how my partner thought he was flirting with me but I missed it, etc. (I have since secured that post and will be sure to be more careful in the future.)
ANYWAY! I guess my lack of discretion has raised some eyebrows. Understandably, really. There was some big meeting within the company (yikes!) because of it and my DM has been wrestling with how to handle the situation. He finally spoke with me directly about it, which I appriciate. It sounds like the main concern is that I'm more focused on flirting with firemen than doing my job. I was horrified to hear that as it just plain isn't true, as anyone who knows me is aware of. (It may have helped that I mentioned my oblivious-ness (is that a word?) but I don't know how much.)
I love this job and I would love it just as much if I never interacted with a single firefighter. I get to go out and made a difference in people's lives. I get to come out on what is quite probably someone's worst day ever and get a chance to make it even just a little bit better. What I do or don't do actually has an impact on people. I do something for a living that has a higher purpose, something that doesn't just put money in someone's pockets. As concerned as I am about how this may have affected my relations with the local FD, I'm far more worried about people thinking I don't take this job very, very seriously.
My DM and I had a long talk about the whole thing. He wasn't as concerned as this post probably makes it sound, he mostly just wanted to make me aware of the situation. He sounds like he's happy with the job I've done thus far, but I'm still kicking myself for putting myself (and ultimately him) in this position. He's also correct in the assumption that most of the FD has already seen that post. I only hope things don't change, that this whole mess doesn't have a negative impact on my relations with Fire or my standing in the company. I really like the people I work with regularly and don't want them to think of me as some firefighter-chasing hussy. I wouldn't date a FF in this area even if the opportunity arose -- that's shitting where you eat (or getting you money and honey in the same place, as my DM put it) which is phenomenally stupid.
Lesson to be learned? Beward of offhanded comments, my friends! Remember the internet is smaller than you think!
As for the person who brought the post to my company's attention? I understand why it was done, absolutely. I just hope they see this post as well. I doubt this one would be passed along with the speed or curiousity as the last, but one can hope, right?
**sigh**
